Sarah's Artist Statement
My favourite tools to use are the traditional ones like the paintbrush or my fingers. However I do like to experiment with other tools.
My favourite media are watercolour, pastels (soft, oil and water-soluble), mixed media or special media, and acrylic. These materials are more flexible and manageable and I can always create what I am aiming for.
I have very enigmatic techniques for works like "Colour Attack" and "Emotion's Bed"...which I will not divulge.
I love the result. I love looking back at my pieces to try and figure out what I was thinking and feeling when I created it. I love what emotions and meanings are stirred when an audience views my works, and how they interpret it.
In the end a piece needs to express everything that I am feeling when creating it, such as anger and frustration, joy, et cetera. I also want my art to inspire others to create their own.
Vibrancy and a lot of colour is a form of pattern I use, as it is present in all my works. You could say there is a pattern in the way I select materials. I only use materials such as soft pastels, or special media on smooth surfaces like paper. I use other materials like watercolour, water-soluble oil pastels and acrylic on canvases and canvas panels. However, I will use charcoal on both smooth and rough surfaces so I can get different results.
I want to make sure I experiment, and not just follow rules in art. I make art for myself and not just for an audience. I have used media that I do not believe has been used in art before. But I cannot tell you what they are. :)
My favourite colours are brown and green. I am pretty sure that I have used both in every one of my pieces, apart from my more traditional or classical pieces of shades black and white.
Travelling would be great to expose my talents. Art in residency programs is something I have been considering.
